  1. Jeff Bezos Hits Wealth Record of $211 Billion on Pentagon Move (07/07/2021 - Reddit Stock Market)
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/jeff-bezos-hits-wealth-record-210825846.html Scott Carpenter and Sophie Alexander Tue, July 6, 2021, 5:08 PM MSFT +0.00% AMZN +4.69% TSLA -2.85% (Bloomberg) -- Jeff Bezos is leaving the rest of the world behind when it comes to wealth accumulation. The world’s richest man reached a record $211 billion net worth Tuesday after Amazon.com Inc. shares rose 4.7% after the Pentagon announced it was canceling a cloud-computing contract with rival Microsoft Corp. The rally raised Bezos’s fortune by $8.4 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The last time anyone in the Bloomberg ranking neared this amount was in January, when Tesla Inc.’s Elon Musk briefly hit $210 billion. The two men spent the first part of the year trading the top spot as the world’s richest person, but Bezos has cemented his hold on No. 1 since mid-March as Amazon shares climbed almost 20% during that time. Soaring stock prices in recent months have boosted the fortunes of a group of tech titans including Musk. He remains in second place behind Bezos with a $180.8 billion net worth even as Tesla shares fell Tuesday. French luxury goods magnate Bernard Arnault is third at $168.5 billion. Bezos’s record haul is even greater than during a 2020 Amazon stock surge, when his net worth topped out at $206.9 billion as the pandemic turbocharged the company’s price. Bezos, 57, officially stepped down as Amazon’s chief executive officer this week after a 27-year run. He still owns about 11% of the company and serves as the firm’s executive chairman. The Pentagon said Tuesday it was scrapping a $10 billion cloud-computing contract awarded in 2019 to Microsoft Corp. after several years of wrangling between the government and some of the biggest U.S. tech companies over the deal. The decision indicates it planned to split the work between Microsoft and rival Amazon. 7. Who is the richest person in the world? (19/02/2021 - The Motley Fool UK)
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is back to being the world’s richest person six weeks after ceding the top spot to Tesla founder Elon Musk.   Earlier in January, Musk had become the world’s richest person after Tesla’s share price soared. But on Tuesday 16 February, Tesla’s shares fell by 2.4%, wiping about $4.6 billion (£3.3 billion) off Musk’s fortune and ultimately knocking him off the top of the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.   Here’s a rundown of the five richest people in the world right now and a brief overview of how they made their fortunes. 1. Jeff Bezos Current worth: $191 billion (£138 billion) More than 90% of the outgoing Amazon CEO’s wealth is tied to his 11% stake in the company, which is valued at £174 billion. Amazon is the world’s biggest e-commerce site. The company witnessed massive revenue growth in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic that has resulted in more people shopping online than offline. He also owns Blue Origin, a space exploration firm, and the Washington Post newspaper. 2. Elon Musk Current worth: $190 billion (£137 billion) Musk is the CEO of electric car manufacturer Tesla whose shares have surged by more than 700% in 2020, making Tesla the world’s most valuable car company. The 170 million shares he owns in the company increased in value by more than $100 billion in 2020. Tesla’s journey is a testament to the benefits of long-term investing. Despite plenty of wild swings, those who bought shares in Tesla right from the beginning and held onto their investment have seen its value increase exponentially from $17 per share at its IPO in 2010 to its current price of around $800. That’s an increase of more than 4700%! Tesla recently revealed that it has invested about $1.5 billion in Bitcoin. Musk is also the owner and a major shareholder in SpaceX. The company’s fortunes have also risen in recent times after a new round of funding that propelled the value of the company to $74 billion. 3. Bill Gates Current worth: $137 billion (£99 billion) Bill Gates has been an ever-present name in the world’s rich list for the last three decades. Much of his money came from his stake in software company Microsoft, which first made him a billionaire in the late 1980s after going public. Gates has sold much of his stake in Microsoft over the years. Right now, he holds just a little over 1% in the company. The majority of his current fortune is derived from Cascade Investment, a holding company that was created with proceeds of Microsoft stock sale and dividends. Cascade owns stocks in dozens of public companies around the world. 4. Bernard Arnault Current worth: $116 billion (£84 billion) French national Arnault, the richest man in Europe, is the chairman and CEO of LVMH, which is the world’s largest luxury goods company. Brands under LVMH include the likes of Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Hennessey. The bulk of Arnault’s fortune comes from his 97.5% stake in Christian Dior, the luxury fashion house that also controls 41.2% of LVMH. Together with his family, Arnault also holds an additional 6.2% stake in LVMH. 5. Mark Zuckerberg Current worth: $104 billion (£75 billion) Zuckerberg is the founder and CEO of the world’s largest social media site Facebook. In fact, much of his fortune comes from his 13% stake in the company that had its IPO in 2012. Like his fellow tech billionaires, he has seen his wealth soar during the pandemic as more people have gone online, causing the value of companies such as Facebook to rise. “This Stock Could Be Like Buying Amazon in 1997” I’m sure you’ll agree that’s quite the statement from Motley Fool Co-Founder Tom Gardner. But since our US analyst team first recommended shares in this unique tech stock back in 2016, the value has soared. What’s more, we firmly believe there’s still plenty of upside in its future. In fact, even throughout the current coronavirus crisis, its performance has been beating Wall St expectations. Elon Musk reveals the 5 big investments that fuel his more than $160 billion net worth | Markets Insider (businessinsider.com) Matthew Fox Jul. 23, 2021, 08:36 AM Elon Musk's net worth topped more than $160 billion this year, making him the second richest person on Earth. Musk's net worth is driven by five investments, which he revealed at a conference on Wednesday. These are the five holdings behind Musk's net worth. Sign up here for our daily newsletter, 10 Things Before the Opening Bell. Elon Musk's net worth of more than $160 billion makes the Tesla CEO the second richest person on Earth, just behind Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. At a bitcoin-focused conference on Wednesday, Musk revealed the 5 big investments that fuel his massive wealth. Unsurprisingly, his wealth, like most billionaires, is highly concentrated in a handful of names, and Musk is only invested in one public company. These are the 5 big investments driving Elon Musk's more than $160 billion net worth. 5. Dogecoin Dogecoin Musk's Stake: Unknown. Coined "the dogefather," Musk has been a long-time proponent of dogecoin and often tweets jokes about the meme-inspired cryptocurrency. In May, Dogecoin peaked at about $0.75 in anticipation of Musk's hosting of Saturday Night Live. Since its peak, dogecoin is down more than 70%. 4. Ethereum Ethereum Musk's Stake: Unknown 3. Bitcoin Bitcoin Musk's Stake: Unknown. "The bitcoin I own is worth much more than the ethereum or doge [that I own]," Musk said at Wednesday's conference. Musk added that both SpaceX and Tesla own bitcoin, and that he is open to Tesla accepting bitcoin as a form of payment again once bitcoin mining is more reliant on clean energy. 2. SpaceX John Raoux/AP Photo Stake: Estimated at 48%, but could be lower if Musk's stake was diluted during the last funding round. Value: $35 billion, based on SpaceX's last funding round valuation of $74 billion, and assuming Musks till owns 48% of the space exploration company. 1. Tesla Xinhua/Ding Ting via Getty Images Stake: 22.4%, as of December 31. Musk can still receive billions more in Tesla stock based on his pay agreement. Value: $141 billion, based on Tesla's market valuation of $631 billion as of July 21. Aside from the investments listed above, Musk added that he owns a stake in two of his early-stage private companies, Neuralink and Boring Company, but that those investments are of little significance in value relative to the others. submitted by /u/SavannahSmiles_ [link] [comments]

  11. Elon Musk laughs at a meme about Jeff Bezos' upcoming space flight, making fun of him for only touching the edge of space (18/07/2021 - Reddit Stock Market)
Elon Musk laughs at a meme about Jeff Bezos' upcoming space flight, making fun of him for only touching the edge of space | Markets Insider (businessinsider.com) Isobel Asher Hamilton Jul. 18, 2021, 06:39 AM Elon Musk commented "haha" on a meme about Jeff Bezos' upcoming space flight. The meme mocked Bezos' flight because it will be sub-orbital - it will only touch the edge of space. Musk has had a long-running rivalry with Bezos as the pair both own space exploration companies. Elon Musk enjoyed a meme on Saturday poking fun at Jeff Bezos' upcoming flight to the edge of space. Musk commented "haha" under a meme posted on Twitter about Bezos' flight. The meme shows Bezos talking to Musk about his flight, but with their faces superimposed onto Anakin Skywalker and Padme from "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack Of The Clones" - a popular meme format. -Charly (@Charly923407591) July 17, 2021 The meme makes fun of the fact Jeff Bezos' flight will be sub-orbital, meaning it will only just touch the edge of space before coming back down to Earth, rather than going into orbit. Bezos is scheduled to fly onboard New Shepard, a spacecraft made by his company Blue Origin, on July 20. Bezos' flight is slated to fly just above the Kármán line, an imaginary line 62 miles above sea-level, which some use to define the boundary between the Earth's atmosphere and space. Bezos' flight should take roughly 11 minutes, during which Bezos and the other passengers will experience approximately three minutes of weightlessness. Travelling with Bezos will be his brother Mark Bezos, 82-year-old aviator Wally Funk, and 18-year-old physics student Oliver Daeman. Elon Musk has had a long-running rivalry with Bezos, as both billionaires own space exploration companies. Musk's company SpaceX has a stated goal of one day transporting human beings to Mars, and Musk has said he wants to help colonise the red planet. Musk has previously called Bezos' Blue Origin a "copycat," and made fun of the company's proposed lunar lander Blue Moon comparing it to "blue balls." Recently, the two companies have clashed over a contract awarded to SpaceX by NASA in April, with Blue Origin lobbying Washington to allow NASA to give out more money to another company. submitted by /u/SavannahSmiles_ [link] [comments]

  24. How did Elon Musk make his money? (30/03/2021 - The Motley Fool UK)
Elon Reeve Musk made his money in several industries, though Tesla is currently his most successful enterprise. A business magnate and engineer, Musk is one of the richest people in the world. He’s also known for investing in risky industries, including space rockets and electric cars when both seemed the stuff of science fiction. In fact, Musk has said that one of the keys to his success is taking risks. When he created SpaceX, a rocket-building company, he was quoted saying, “Creating a rocket company has to be one of the dumbest and hardest ways to ‘make money’. But I thought, ‘nobody is going to be crazy enough to do space, so I’d better do space.’”  [top_pitch] Where did Elon Musk go to college? Musk was born and grew up in South Africa, where he eventually enrolled at the University of Pretoria. He soon moved to Canada to attend Queen’s University before moving on to the University of Pennsylvania. He eventually graduated with two bachelor’s degrees: one in economics and one in physics. When he was 23 years old, Musk held internships at an energy storage company and a video game developer. A year later, he joined Stanford University’s PhD programme in energy physics and materials science but quit after just a few days to pursue his own business. Still, these studies and internships formed the base for how Elon Musk made his money later on. How did Elon Musk become a millionaire? Just after leaving Stanford in 1995, Elon Musk and his brother Kimbal founded Zip2 Corporation. The company provided city guide and directory software to newspapers. In 1999, the company was sold to Compaq Computer Corporation for over $300 million (£216 million). At the age of 27, Musk became a self-made millionaire. Musk used the money from that sale to start X.com, which eventually morphed into PayPal. After just three years, eBay acquired PayPal for a cool $1.5 billion (around £1.1 billion), of which Musk received a significant portion. [middle_pitch] Is Elon Musk a billionaire? By the 2000s, Elon Musk was doing big things. In 2001, he pursued one of his biggest passions when he founded SpaceX, which designs and manufactures rockets and spacecraft. In 2004 he joined Tesla’s board of directors just a year after the company’s foundation. By 2007, Musk had assumed leadership of the company and was overseeing designs and manufacturing. Both SpaceX and Tesla had some rocky years along the way, but SpaceX eventually generated billions of dollars in government contracts. In 2020, the company sent two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. The next step is private flights into orbit on the company’s Crew Dragon vehicle. This alone could generate many more millions for Musk. Musk debuted on the Forbes Billionaires List in 2012, thanks to Tesla. Just a few months earlier, Forbes had estimated that Musk’s net worth was ‘only’ $680 million (£490 million). But once Tesla unveiled the Model X car (and before it went into production in early 2013), Tesla stock skyrocketed and pushed Musk into the billionaire list. Elon Musk is also a co-owner of SolarCity, a company that focuses on solar panels and systems and is now a subsidiary of Tesla. How much money does Elon Musk have now? As of 2020, Elon Musk is a centibillionaire (somebody with more than one hundred billion in a given currency) and the second richest person in the world with a fortune of $162.4 billion (£117.3 billion). Just a year ago, in March 2020, Musk was ranked 35th in the list of richest people in the world. Since then, Tesla’s stock split caused a massive 720% growth. At one point, the stock earned him over $10 billion (£7.2 billion) in a week. “This Stock Could Be Like Buying Amazon in 1997” I’m sure you’ll agree that’s quite the statement from Motley Fool Co-Founder Tom Gardner. 30. Space tourism could be $800bn market as Jeff Bezos takes off in Blue Origin rocket (20/07/2021 - Reddit Stock Market)
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/blue-origin-jeff-bezos-amazon-space-takeoff-rocket-tourism-135726388.html Oscar Williams-Grut·Senior City Correspondent, Yahoo Finance UK Tue, July 20, 2021, 9:57 AM In this article: SPCE-7.18% AMZN+0.26% BABWF+5.14% ICAGY+1.84% ICHGF0.00% IHG+0.45% DAL+3.92% AAL+4.80% TSLA+0.36% Where are you going for your next holiday? How about the moon? Experts believe space tourism could blossom into a multi-billion-dollar market within the next decade. It comes as billionaire trailblazers Sir Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos pioneer commercial flights outside of the earth's atmosphere. Amazon (AMZN) founder Bezos, the world's richest man, successfully completed a trip to space on Tuesday on a rocket made by his own private space exploration company Blue Origin. Bezos completed a roughly 10-minute trip to space on Thursday accompanied by his brother, Mark Bezos, Wally Funk, an 82-year-old veteran of the original space race, and 18-year-old Dutch student Oliver Daemen. The trip comes just days after fellow billionaire Sir Richard Branson completed a similar trip on a Virgin Galactic (SPCE) ship. Along with Tesla (TSLA) boss Elon Musk, who runs SpaceX, the mega-wealthy trio are pioneering a private space industry that one day hopes to offer commercial services to the masses. Analysts at investment bank UBS said on Tuesday that space tourism could become a reality for ordinary folk "in the not too distant future". "While space tourism is still nascent, we think it will become mainstream as the technology becomes proven and cost falls," analysts wrote in a note circulated to clients just hours before Bezos' trip on The New Shepherd rocket. "By c2030, we estimate space tourism will be a $3bn-plus p.a. opportunity growing at double digit-rates." Space tourism is predicted to be just one part of a $805bn market by the start of the next decade. The other major opportunity is long-haul flights via space. While it might sound far-fetched, UBS analysts said hotel companies, airlines, and tour operators should start thinking about space now before it's too late. "Like many other new disruptive segments (e.g., internet, digital photography), it is not the risk-averse incumbents that are the first movers, but new players," analysts wrote. "One could ask whether, at that point, it will be too late for incumbents to engage." submitted by /u/SavannahSmiles_ [link] [comments]

  43. Will Tesla's Stock Price Drop After the Video Released by Anonymous Against Elon Musk? I think There's a Good Chance. (06/06/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
So Anonymous seems to be targeting Elon Musk now. I won't really go into detail in that at all, but it does have me wondering how this will affect TSLA stock price. Tesla usually trades more on hype and FUD than anything else and it is a very volatile stock. With a very serious group like Anonymous making claims about Elon Musk(that I think a lot of people agree with) I think word can spread fast. Just like Elon can send any crypto or stock flying just by hinting at a name or ticker on social media without outright mentioning anything, I think a whole video by anonymous could stir up negative news surrounding Elon, and Elon as a whole is what I think is holding up Teslas stock price. Bad news or controversy comes out surrounding Musk could spell disaster for what many seem to think is one of the most over-inflated stocks on the market. Even after dropping about 30% from it's ATH's and sticking to these levels for a few months, I think there's definitely a good chance that on Monday this stock opens anywhere from 5-10% or even more on a downward trend. Without getting too political or off-topic, how do you guys think this will affect TSLA? I'm leaning towards bearish, but also would not be surprised if this somehow does nothing to the stock price and goes nowhere. TSLA has avoided a decent amount of controversy before but there have been a few instances where a piece of controversy sends the stock tumbling for a little bit, but up until now every small drop has been followed by an insane jump seeing new ATH's. For some reason I think this time might be different. Disclosure: No positions in TSLA but will heavily consider buying if it ever sees $400-450 again submitted by /u/Microtonal_Valley [link] [comments]
