Do you vote in annual shareholder meetings on ESG proposals or CEO pay as part of your investment activities?

Reddit Stock Market

05/03/2021 - 17:07

I'm a relatively new investor and I have learned recently about my right to vote as a shareholder. Do other investors here vote in shareholder meetings, or do you typically ignore them because they are dominated by larger institutional investors? There appears to be a massive potential for a collective action problem here. I'm curious because it seems like we retail investors have more power over the market than we originally thought. I wonder if Reddit could significantly influence not just stock price, but the direction a company takes in the future, especially with respect to ESG proposals. submitted by /u/allowtheallow [link] [comments]

  2. Shareholder voting: Where to get independent information and advice (for big companies)? (11/04/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
Hello, r/stocks. I am trying to be a responsible investor and vote on the issues presented to shareholders for various annual meetings. The problem is that I really don't know how to effectively find information on the people and proposals beyond the recommendation of the board. For example, Ford ($F) is holding a meeting and presented this proposal, on which the board is recommending a "no" vote: Relating to Consideration of a Recapitalization Plan to Provide That All of the Company's Outstanding Stock Have One Vote Per Share. Is there a place or method that people use to find independent recommendations on shareholder voting? Obviously, this would be mostly for big companies; I don't expect much info on an OTC junior mining venture, etc. Thanks for any advice! And if I am asking the wrong questions, please feel free to point me in the right direction. submitted by /u/Dry_Tortuga_Island [link] [comments]

  5. Question about Proxy voting (22/03/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
Feels like a real rookie thing to ask, even though I've been investing for a few years: What's the difference between proxy cards, and how do you vote with them? I've never voted during annual meetings, which yes, I know, shame on me, but I'm starting to. For instance: Currently own XOM, and there's that whole thing with Engine 1. I received an email from my broker like I do for every stock I hold with a link for the Blue card. Engine 1 encourages voting the White card, but I A) Don't know the difference between the two and B) how to vote White card if I wanted to. Since I can't see what's on it, I'm not even sure which way I want to vote. Can anybody help a noob out? submitted by /u/flankerrugger [link] [comments]

  8. Do retail investors have the potential to actively change a company through voting? (16/06/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
I like to trade and invest in stocks in my free time and like most people whenever a new meme stock comes around, I like to watch from the sidelines and sometimes join in with a few shares. After seeing the aftermath/now of the huge impact millions of retail investors had on stocks like GME, AMC, etc. I started to wonder... What if all of these retail investors were to vote together? Could they have a significant effect on a company? Personally, I will just ignore any email I get about voting at a shareholder meeting since I know my vote will be meaningless but if retail investors, or reddit for example, was to come together and vote wouldn't there be a possibility that they could actually change a company? I have very little knowledge on shareholder voting so maybe my random thought was meaningless but if there was a way for retail investors votes to actually make a change it would be interesting to think about the possibilities. It would probably have to be a change that is either meme enough so people can vote together or something like right to repair where all the consumers (retail investors) will be happy. tldr: title + what if wsb all voted together on amc or gme? submitted by /u/JimboCrackers [link] [comments]

Shareholders will receive 29/share. Current price is 22.xx. The board approved the buyout in march. All that is left is a shareholder vote and standard regulatory approvals. Supposed to occur in the latter half of 2021. I recently put 5k (35% of portfolio) into this with an average cost of 23.76. And now it’s dipped even lower to where returns are approaching 30% at the current price. I’m still fairly new so I’ve not seen this happen yet with stocks I’m I hold. How unlikely is this not to go through? I can’t imagine shareholders would vote against free money. Is it common such buyout is not approved by the SEC? I bought a few shares from an old company I worked at when I was leaving. They recently sent this email. To avoid such negative tax consequences, we are undertaking a shareholder “cleanse” vote, which essentially eliminates the negative tax consequences if more than 75% of the company’s voting shareholders affirm the applicable certain payments to executives.
