Psycho Market Recap - Tue Sept 14

Reddit Stocks

14/09/2021 - 22:25

Despite breaking a five-day losing streak yesterday, stocks once again fell today, with the three major indexes and the Russell 2000 (IWM) finishing firmly in the red as market participants digested new economic data and continue monitoring the coronavirus Delta variant situation in the US, which may finally be cresting. The Labor Department reported that its Consumer price index (CPI), which tracks the price of a weighted average market basket of consumer goods and services purchased, rose at its slowest pace in six months in August, suggesting that while the inflation rate may remain high for a while due to supply-side constraints, it’s likely the rate of increase has already peaked. Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 0.1% last month, the smallest gain since February and below the 0.3% rise in July. On a year-on-year basis, CPI has decreased to 4% from 4.3% in July, an encouraging sign. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the core CPI gaining 0.3% and the overall CPI rising 0.4%. It may not seem like it but this is a large month-to-month change. The Fed's preferred inflation measure for its flexible 2% inflation target, the core personal consumption expenditures price index, increased 3.6% in the 12 months through July after a similar gain in June. August's data will be published later this month. The CPI report comes at a time when the market’s attention is firmly focused on when the Fed will announce it will start scaling back pandemic-era quantitative easing. Powell has offered no signal beyond saying it “could be this year.” Other members of the Fed have been more hawkish in their stance. As I have reiterated more times than I can count, I remain unconcerned with tapering talks (see the 2013 Taper Tantrum). I remain bullish until the Fed begins considering interest rate hikes, at which time I will reassess. In positive news, there are signs that the wave of coronavirus Delta variant cases in the US may be cresting. The seven-day average of daily Covid cases is about 144,300 as of Sept. 12, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. That figure is down 12% over the past week and 14% from the most recent peak in case counts on Sept. 1, when the country was reporting an average of roughly 167,600 cases per day. Dr. Arturo Casadevall, Chair of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at Johns Hopkins University said, This is good news. It could represent that we have reached a peak and we are now on the way down.” As of Sept 12, 54.4% of the US population is fully vaccinated while 63.8% have received at least one dose of either Pfizer (PFE) or Moderna (MRNA). Highlights - Yesterday, according to a report by the Financial Times, the CCP intends to break up Alipay, the financial super-app owned by Jack Ma’s Ant Group that has more than $1 billion users, and force the creation of a new entity for the company’s lending unit. The plan will also see Ant turn over user data that underpins its data decision to a new credit scoring joint-venture which will be partly state-owned. https://www.ft.com/content/01b7c7ca-71ad-4baa-bddf-a4d5e65c5d79 - Boeing (BA) raised long-0term demand forecasts today, signaling the company expects a snapback in commercial air travel once coronavirus Delta variant fears temper. - Microsoft (MSFT) outperformed after Morgan Stanley released a report saying it was expecting a 10% dividend hike. - China, the world's biggest vehicle market where regulators are implementing new rules on data protection, is developing machines that will be able to track data sent abroad by cars, a government-backed agency said on Tuesday. - Last week, a judge in California sided with Epic Games and issued Apple a permanent injunction against their App Store policies. This move opens the door for developers to offer customers third-party payment options that do not force developers to pay Apple’s 15-30% commission. This is massive for companies that make a lot of their revenue through the app store. - A cyber surveillance company based in Israel has developed a tool than can break into Apple iPhones with a never-before-seen technique for at least six months, internet security watchdog group Citizen Lab said on Monday. The discovery is important because of the critical nature of the vulnerability, which affects all versions of Apple's iOS, OSX, and watchOS. Apple confirmed the vulnerability and said the issue has been fixed in today’s software update. ViacomCBS (VIAC) will be restructuring Paramount Pictures amid a broader management shake-up, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal. The realignment will see Paramount focus primarily on making content for sister cable and streaming networks. 2. Nasdaq behaves like a fucking psycho? (15/06/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
So Nasdaq rallied in the last couple weeks and set a record high and shit until the day before the FOMC, expecting that there won’t be any changes in the monetary policy and inflation won’t be a problem in this quarter. So far, there has not been a new news or clue that hurts such an expectation, and Nasdaq is tanking in these last few hours before the FOMC starts like all of sudden there will be some bad shit coming up from the FOMC. I mean, seriously what the fuck? People could have run at least 2-3 days before the FOMC but didn’t because everything was going to be alright according to many sources. I would understand if there was some huge announcement or news earlier today that can possibly turn things around, but there was none. Nasdaq is literally behaving like a fucking psycho, man. submitted by /u/I_whip_idiots [link] [comments]

  15. Call Option Grey Area Regarding a Buyout (05/08/2021 - Reddit Stock Market)
As of this morning, SCR was bought out by PENN. Bit of a weird situation for me - I had SCR Sept 17 17.5 calls (bought at 2.00). But set them as GTC @ 4.00. The calls were hovering around 2.00 yesterday at close, then skyrocketed to around 10.50 as of 9:40am. Brokerage seems to have paid me out for much more than the GTC execution - leading me to believe I got lucky. So my question is: Would I get paid out for my GTC @ 4.00, or would they pay me out for whatever the open price of the calls were at 9:30 (seems to have been around 9.95)? Or have I gotten lucky that there were no buyers waiting to pick up SCR Sept 17 17.5 calls this morning? submitted by /u/AnimalTom23 [link] [comments]

  23. Could we be on a verge of a big push to the upside? (07/07/2021 - Reddit Stock Market)
I think it's possible we might be soon seeing a massive breakout to the upside everywhere. There was a lockdown in place in September, so CPI values for September onwards could skyrocket and show massive inflation given there are no lockdowns and people continue to spend their money. SPX appears to be on a breakout rally NDX/SPX ratio soon about to breakout from dotcom high Hive Blockchains follows fractal from Sept-Oct 2017 There's also similarity in BTC's price action from that period following the China FUD of 2017 DXY is at a big resistance level Euro appears to be confirming a breakout Riot also follows Sept-Oct fractal British Pound against USD appears to be confirming a breakout on log scale too August-Sept doesn't seem to be a good period for stocks in general, but inflation data this time could change this and we could see a massive push to the upside with crashing dollar. Shiller's P/E ratio tends to reject from this trendline, so there's still plenty of room to go overvalued. Gold is also above the previous ATH support/resistance level and with partial Basel 3 rollout there is a good case for a big push to the upside coming What do you think? submitted by /u/decentgangster [link] [comments]

  34. Weekly jobless claims post sharp drop to 310,000, another new pandemic low (09/09/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
First-time filings for unemployment claims in the U.S. dropped to 310,000 last week, easily the lowest of the Covid era and a significant step toward the pre-pandemic normal, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Claims had been expected to total 335,000 for the week ended Sept. 4, according to economists surveyed by Dow Jones. The total for the week ended Sept. 4 represented a substantial drop from the previous week’s 345,000 and is the lowest since March 14, 2020. Claims may have been still lower except for a substantial bump in Louisiana, which was hammered by Hurricane Ida and still has nearly 250,000 homes and businesses without power. https://www.cnbc.com/2021/09/09/weekly-jobless-claims-.html submitted by /u/mikeyrocksin2021 [link] [comments]

  39. Steady return over 6 months for student loans (12/03/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
While student loans are at 0% and no payment due I’ve been diligently paying down the principal every month. It just occurred to me that a better approach might be to DCA that money weekly into a stock or ETF. The goal being to cash out in 6 months when the first payment is due in Sept (or later if they extend the program again). What do you all think of a fund or company that will grow steadily with a target of 20%+ growth over a short timeframe. My thoughts: AMZN (new CEO, Amazon Fresh and AWS growth) one of the ARK funds (risky but high return) RKT (mortgages should be hot this summer) QQQ (bet on tech bouncing back strong) DAL or LUV (bet on travel increasing) DIS (parks opening, and continued D+ growth) I’d like to pick just one so I can easily track that money and just cash out and pay the loan when it’s time. If in sept it looks really positive I might just pay the minimum on the loan and keep feeding the stock until I have enough to pay it off completely. submitted by /u/trail34 [link] [comments]
