  11. This week - watching non-Texan oil refinery stocks (20/02/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
Something to keep in mind given the Texas weather... thinking about oil refineries. I wouldn’t normally invest in these but I see an opportunity over the next couple of weeks. What Texas is dealing with is a significant issue with several refineries offline. What’s significant is how these refineries would have been shutdown. They were not shutdown in a controlled fashion. They shutdown because they lost power so they didn’t get a chance to de-inventory systems properly. Add to that the fact that they were below freezing temperatures with product not flowing in lines, and a general lack of steam tracing/jacketing on pipes given their locations. - this will make the refinery restarts extremely complex. They will be dealing with freeze/splits in piping and it could take weeks to get a major refinery back online. See below: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-18/gulf-coast-fuel-makers-could-take-a-week-to-restart-after-freeze As a result, I will be taking positions in VLO (Valero), PBF, and HFC (Holly Frontier). These companies own several refineries each, with only a couple in Texas. If the major refineries are offline for weeks per the article, it will cause significant drops in gasoline and distillate inventories across the US, increasing gas and distillate cracks accordingly. You aren’t going to double your money, and all 3 stocks were up Friday on this news, but to me it’s an easy short term play over the next week or two. submitted by /u/fraggle_captain [link] [comments]

  13. WTI & Brent vs. Refineries like MRO, Conoco, etc. (30/07/2021 - Reddit Stocks)
I have a bit invested in MRO and a few other refineries and have seen some decent gains over the last few months. That said, crude oil took a hit last week with the OPEC+ meeting and the outlook of increased output. While there is still concern over covid and the potential variants, crude has been recovering. MRO, Conoco and others in the same vein have only seen moderate recovery since then and have been slow to recover, despite keeping pace with crude prior. Is the recovery from some of these refineries and producers being muted by upcoming earning's and dividends or is there some other factor keep the price down relative to the cost of crude? My personal thought is recovery is still out pacing production as countries tap into reserves to keep prices in a healthy range. Maybe that's a play to keep more money internally and to dissuade OPEC+ from increasing production further and tanking the price. Maybe attempting to keep crude at $75-76 range. I know MRO hasn't increased output for shale production, but I would have thought the potential dividends would have attracted more buyers... or is the payout that much of a concern and prices are correcting more aggressively? I'll likely hang onto these investments, but I am concerned about long terms growth if crude continues to rise or even stays flat what will happen to these refineries. submitted by /u/Adroite [link] [comments]
